Aspirin Desensitization

  • There are people who have chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, asthma and will experience worsening of their symptoms when they have taken aspirin or NSAID-containing medications. These people have a condition called “aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease.” Dr. Steven Kernerman at the Spokane Allergy and Asthma Clinic has been trained and offers a procedure to desensitize for the aspirin sensitivity. By doing so, patients with this condition tend to experience less sinusitis, less difficulties with nasal polyps, better control of their asthma, and the ability to take aspirin or aspirin-related drugs including ibuprofen or naproxen. The procedure is done in the office, and generally takes three days to complete. If you have, or know someone who suffers from aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, it may be helpful to arrange a visit to discuss with Dr. Kernerman whether it may be potentially beneficial to look at undergoing desensitization for aspirin.
